Curriculum

Since the California Common Core Standards came out, St. Leo the Great School has been incorporating them into the classroom. Social Studies and Physical Education are guided by the California Content Standards and the Next Generation Science Standards, which came out in 2014, are being incorporated. The Diocesan Religion Outcomes drive Religion instruction.

Students receive instruction in Art, Music, and Physical Education from different instructors. Project Cornerstone is a community-building program that is brought into the classroom by parent volunteers who are trained in the program.

iPads and Macbook Airs are used to run the technology program for the students. The students primarily use the Google Education Suite as well as many apps on the iPads. Students access their online programs under the guidance of the teacher.

Assessment

All students receive progress reports and report cards once a trimester. Report cards are accessible online. Students are assessed on the skills outlined on the Diocesan Report cards that are designated by a scale of 1-5, 5 meaning above grade level. Official Parent-Teacher Conferences occur in the first trimester.

All grades take a diagnostic assessment three times a year called STAR by Renaissance Learning. STAR Assessments are for both Reading and Math and are required by the Diocese of San Jose.

Curriculum

The middle school staff have fully incorporated the California Common Core Standards for Language Arts and Mathematics, as well as the Next Generation Science Standards. For the social studies classes, the staff follows the California State Standards. Religion is taught by following the Diocesan Religion Outcomes. The students are taught by an energetic and passionate staff who have been instructed on the best teaching strategies.

St. Leo’s adopts curriculum programs that are recommended by the Department of Catholic Schools and follow the California State Standards. Currently, Eureka Math is the math curriculum used in the middle school, which is a revolutionary math program designed by the company Great Minds. STEMScopes is the Science curriculum, History Alive by TCI is the Social Studies curriculum, and Journey’s combined with Lucy Calkins’s Writers Workshop is the Language Arts curriculum.

Students receive instruction in Music (6th Grade), Computers, Physical Education, and Art. They also have the opportunity to join the school choir and Robotics.

Assessment

All grades take a diagnostic assessment three times a year called STAR by Renaissance Learning. STAR Assessments are for both Reading and Math and are required by the Diocese of San Jose.

Report Cards come out once a trimester and are accessible online. Every parent has an individual log in, and the students log in as well to keep abreast of their progress.

LEAP Program at St. Leo the Great School

St Leo the Great School  supports all students to reach their individual potential. With the establishment of the Learning Enrichment and Assistance Program (LEAP), St. Leo’s has expanded support addressing the needs of all students. The LEAP team offers support with in-class or small groups as needed for all grade levels, using an RTI (Response to Intervention) model.

Our LEAP team includes two Learning Specialists with a master’s degree in Special Education, and a professor from San Jose State University who teaches Occupational Therapy. Through a partnership with San Jose State,  speech, language, and hearing screenings are provided every fall.

If it becomes necessary to supplement the instructional practices for students demonstrating a need for additional academic and/or social emotional support, we provide academic interventions in various ways.

  • Small group instruction within the classroom is available in most grade levels
  • Targeted small group instruction with students of similar abilities
  • Use of a student success study team to identify student strengths and opportunities for growth
  • Creating an Individual Student Learning Plan with documentation from a variety assessment sources

We collaborate with parents, teachers and the student to celebrate the student’s strengths along with  identifying and supporting interventions for phonics, reading, writing, math and social emotional growth.
